Poker pro Beth Shak has designed a pair of poker shoes. She will be showcasing the shoes during the WSOP. The World Series of Poker is a time of great visability for poker players, and Shak is using that time to show off her custom pair of luxurious Walter Steiger shoes. The shootout format is an interesting one, appealing to players of all levels of skill. Those who dominate sit n goes online and live one-table satellites feel that they have an edge, while those with a great deal of no-limit holdem live tournament experience enjoy shootouts as well. But Event 6 required a $5,000 buy-in, making it a bit more of an elite field and one to watch.Registration closed with 358 players at 36 tables and a $1,682,600 prize pool. The format gave all of them places at tables on Day 1, but only those who won their tables moved on to Round 2 on Day 2 and were guaranteed a minimum payout of $16,607.

A British invasion has hit in the first week of the WSOP, with plenty of UK success stories to go around. Praz Bansi of the London-based Hit Squad added to his resume Wednesday with a win in the $1.5k No-Limit event, giving the 32-year-old his second career WSOP bracelet. Bansi’s bracelet win is just one in a recent wave of British breakthroughs. Bansi and his fellow Hit Squad member James Akenhead have each emerged in the past year, with both Bansi and Akenhead making the final table at the WSOPE Main Event in 2009. Akenhead was also one of the 2009 November Nine in the WSOP Main Event.

Thousands bought into the first $1,000 buy-in event of the 2010 WSOP on Saturday with over 3,800 registered for the event and even more likely to join the party on Day 1b. It’s been over 10 years since a preliminary event at the WSOP drew more players than the Main Event and it’s a distinct possibility this year. There are still expensive Championship tournaments for professional players but with eight $1,000 buy-in tournaments and 18 $1,500 buy-in events it’s apparent Harrah’s is looking to appease the average poker player who doesn’t have a $200,000 bankroll or sponsorships. Perhaps no one better represents the working class of poker player better than former accountant Chris Moneymaker and he understands why the lower buy-in tournaments are so popular.

All of the big names in poker were present at the start of the $50,000 Players Championship at the 41st World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, the list of big names would run almost the entire length of the registration sheet for the tournament. At the start of the tournament just one name mattered though, the late Chip Reese (pictured left). Before cards got into the air shortly after 5 p.m. today, Brunson said a few words to honor his friend Reese, and then a short tribute video was played. The World Poker Tour is in the process of finding its newest poker champion at the Barcelona Spanish Championship. This event had two start days which proved to draw a record breaking crowd to this event. The buy in for this championship event was an affordable €3,200 + €300 buy-in. Tournament Director Thomas Kremser announced that there were 326 players who entered which totaled the prize pool at over 1 million euro. The top 36 players will be paid. First place will take home €315,000, $25,500 seat to the WPT World Championship, and a Tiffany bracelet.

The last four players for the National Heads-Up Poker Championship are ready to fight it out. The last show will air on NBC on Sunday, May 23rd. The last four players are Annie Duke, Erik Seidel, Scotty Nguyen and Dennis Phillips. The National Heads-Up Poker Championship started with 64 players divided into four brackets, and each player faced another in heads up competition with the winner moving on to the next level. Annie Duke is hosting a charity poker tournament in support of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s nonprofit for at-risk youth group After-School All-Stars Thursday. The event will go off May 20th at 7:30 p.m. PT inside the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles and a host of celebrities and poker pros expected to attend. Actors Don Cheadle, David Zayas, Sara Rue and poker pros Adam “Roothlus” Levy and Tiffany Michelle are among those expected to compete for $35,000 in prizes sponsored by Ultimate Bet. All the proceeds from the $250 event with $100 re-buys will go to After-School All-Stars. “After-School All-Stars is simply an amazing organization,” said Duke.
